Culturlann

Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin is a new purpose built Irish language arts and cultural centre. The new building is a space for learning, creativity, exploration and enterprise and a beacon for the Irish speakers throughout the island of Ireland. The site had to reflect this exciting new approach for Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin.

Culturlann needed a new site to reflect the new, vibrant building. The site needed to be easy to update, able to handle multiple languages, integrate with Culturlann's existing social media and take payment. After in-depth discussions with Culturlann staff we decided that Drupal was the right system for Culturlann.

Why Drupal?

1) Translation management

Our experience of building multilingual sites meant that we knew that Drupal could handle multilingual translations. We didn't have to translate the backend of the site and Drupal made it easy for Culturlann staff to keep the site up to date rather than updating two sites as before.

2) Multimedia

Culturlann weren't able to use the wide range of videos and images that they were taking. As an arts centre this was a key issue for Culturlann. Culturlann were already using social media sites to share their images and videos because they had no way of showcasing them on their own site. Rather than changing their workflow we used the Embedded Media Field to pull images from Flickr and videos from YouTube.

3) Ecommerce

Culturlann wanted to make it as easy as possible for their users to purchase tickets to events in the centre. Using Ubercart we were able to easily integrate the payment process with Culturlann's existing PayPal account.

What we did?

The site required an entire redesign. We worked closely with Culturlann to develop a more coherent information architecture and an inspiring and modern design.

Design

Culturlann had just been established in their exciting new premises ( which has since been nominated for the 2011 Stirling Prize) and wanted the website to have a modern minimalist look & feel to reflect this online. After a number of concepts were explored we went with the above design for its clarity and ease of use - vital attributes when working with a dual language set up.

Outcomes

Culturlann now spend less time keeping two separate sites up to date and are able to showcase the wide range of events that take place in the centre.

Technologies

Culturlann is based on Drupal 6. It relies on I18n to allow easy translation of nodes and Embedded Media Field to allow easy embedding of multimedia from around the web. The TwitterPull module is used to easily pull in Cultulann's tweets.
